Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Freezer is intermittent, works after unplugging it for a while

I have a 5 year old refrigerator with an interesting problem. I think the problem is due to a floating restriction somewhere in the refrigerant line.

If I unplug the unit for a day, then plug it in again, it will work properly for a few days to a few weeks. After a while, warm air is circulated while the compressor continues to run. I know that the defroster element is not causing the warm air because I removed the rear panel to expose the evaporator, it too is warm.

If I shut the unit down, and wait for a few hours, plug the unit back in, it suddenly cools & freezes like it should, then quits again a few days later.

Does this sound like something is floating in the line, works its way to a capillary tube or some other restriction and blocks the Freon? If so, why doesn't the unit trip a circuit breaker due to high compressor head pressure - especially if I unplug the unit and plug it back in immediately? Maybe the restriction is on the suction side? Please help.

Check on the name plate of this one, the tag where you find the model number. If it uses the new refrigerant 134a I’ve heard of quite a few similar problems like this. Seems the oil will pile up in the evaporator (the freezer coils). The resolve varies from make to make but it is a sealed system problem and should be able to be resolved by the local company in your area that does the warranty on whatever brand it is.

Also check your bill, this may be still on warranty as some of these systems were covered for 10 years. Hope this helps.
