Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Freezer section okay, fridge part not

I have a Frigidaire refrigerator that has the freezer on the top (I'm guessing it is about 20 years old). It’s in fairly rough condition but it used to at least work well. My problem is that now the freezer is keeping everything frozen, but the fridge is only getting down to 42 degrees. Any help on what is wrong?

Perhaps it's not automatically defrosting itself. To determine this you could leave it unplugged overnight with the doors open. If it works okay for a few days you will know you have a defrost malfunction. Let me know what happens.

That worked. Will I have to do this all the time or can or is it worth it to be repaired. I don’t have anyone who could help me repair this and I’m "do it yourself challenged". Thank You

Where I live in Canada, phoning a company to repair an automatic defrost circuit costs from $60 to $100. This includes the service call, part, labor, and our many taxes up here. This is just a ball park figure, though, and to get a better idea on this you may have to phone around to some of your local companies (now that you have an idea what it is).

Over the years, though, I've found most refrigerators regardless their condition, are worth this kind of repair. Later on if you want to get a different one you can always sell a working unit for decent money. Even in poor condition offices want them for coffee room fridges and cottage owners need them and so forth.

Just a tip, before your hire someone, you may want to read the article back at my web site about finding the best technician.
