Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

GE freezer up, not cooling or freezing, what do I look for?

My refrigerator is not cooling very well anymore. Also the freezer is not freezing the water in the trays in which I make ice. It is probably about 15 or 20 yrs. old. Can you tell me what the problem might be or what I should check for? It is a General Electric, freezer section on top. Thank you.

It's quite likely, on your design, that the unit has stopped automatically defrosting. I say this because this is quite common in this type of refrigerator. To confirm this, open the freezer door and take a look through the grill right up front at the bottom, underneath the freezer floor.

Under normal operating conditions you should see the aluminum fins of the evaporator. If your unit has a defrost malfunction, all you will see is a solid wall of frost.

If that is in fact the case, you could manually defrost using a hand held hair dryer, with the unit turned off of course. This will keep it running normally until it plugs up again.

Repairing your own defrost circuit is not too difficult. My book and video that you can review back on the web site can show how to do it yourself, if you’re interested.
