Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Gibson side by side not cooling no matter where lever is set

Dear Fridge Dr, The freezer unit is located in the lower right of the appliance and does work very well, I have placed a thermometer in the freezer and have gotten consistent temp readings of 22 degrees.

Our problem is that we cannot get the fridge temperature to drop below 60 degrees. Can you help us with this matter. The make of the fridge is Gibson.

On the left side of the freezer unit there is a lever that when activated either covers or uncovers a hole that goes into the side of the freezer compartment, it does not go directly into the freezer unit but into the housing that surrounds the freezer unit, this lever does not seem to have any effect on either the freezer or fridge temp in either position. I hope I have given you enough info concerning this problem. Thank you,

This refrigerator should have two controls, one in the freezer and one in the refrigerator section. First make sure they are both about mid-point. I say this because on this design, if you turn the control in the refrigerator side all the way up, you choke off the air circulation completely. If you have the controls set mid point for a day or so and you still are having the same problem---

Sounds like you may be having an automatic defrost problem or the fan in the freezer compartment is not running. You should hear a fan in the freezer compartment whenever the compressor is running as they are in the circuit together.

If you have a defrost problem the unit will work fine after leaving it unplugged, with the doors open, for 24hrs. Then as the frost builds up the cooling effect, especially on the refrigerator side, will gradually disappear.

The control lever you speak of is only the control for the bottom crisper drawer and should have no effect on the overall temps.
