Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Ice or frost stops up fan in GE refrigerator

Why is there so much water or should I say condensation forming around the fan of my 10 year old GE that keeps making noise and stopping the blades, which makes it warm inside the refrigerator section? It still freezes in the top.[freezer part] . I can defrost it ,then it starts up again everything is fine until the ice returns in a month or so. Thanks,

This would depend on what is stopping up your fan, frost, white in color, or ice, clear. When diagnosing your problem there are some important differences.

If it is frost, your refrigerator has an automatic defrost malfunction. If you are handy with a few tools my book and video that you can review back on the web site can show you how to repair this yourself.

If it is the ice, then this is a common fault with the GE that has the evaporator(freezer coils) in the floor of the freezer section. What I usually do to solve this problem is melt down the ice then make a few holes through the Styrofoam underneath the fan blades to provide extra drainage. Perhaps this is a jury rigged solution but I’ve done it dozens of times and it always works.
