Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Just moved it out to cottage, not working now

I have a 1993 White Westinghouse Refrigerator P/N RT217NCDI that I recently purchased used. I moved it approx. 90 miles to my lake house. It does not keep food cold even at the highest (coldest setting). I pulled the refrigerator out and noticed that there was no fan blowing on the compressor that I could observe. There is an inlet below the compressor but I cannot tell if that is for movement of air from a fan under the frig or not. I also noticed that a relay that is on the left side (looking from the back) appears to have been replaced since the one that is currently in the frig does not fit into the bracket provided on the back of the frig.

This refrigerator is in excellent shape other than the problems described and I would like to keep it if possible. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

If the compressor and the fan in the freezer are both running in unison as they should, you either have an automatic defrost malfunction or a refrigerant problem. The probability of the latter may be higher if you had to lay it down during the move.

A refrigerant problem will have to be referred to a technician, but a defrost problem can be repaired by yourself. To determine which one you have, unplug it for a few days and if it works fine once you start it up again (for a few days till it plugs up), you have an automatic defrost problem. A tip for you is that this design of refrigerator has a weak spot, the defrost timer.
