Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Not getting cold and notice presence of oil on a refrigeration line
My refrigerator suddenly stopped getting cold. The evaporator fan runs continuously. The compressor is not its old robust self but runs weekly. The condenser fan is working. A refrigerant line to the compressor has an oil covering for 10-12". When I plugged in the electric, it frosted up. The temperature control tested normal: 0 resistance at coldest (actually at all settings.) It is a 22' side-by-side GE frost-free, about 25 years old. What's wrong and is it worth fixing?
This sounds like a refrigerant leak. Wherever you see the oil on R12 systems that's where the leak is. This undoubtedly is causing the symptoms that you note. Unfortunately you will have to call in a tech to repair this but it shouldn't be too serious because the source of the problem is obvious. Many times when we are searching for a leak it takes a long time if we can even find it. To give you a ballpark idea of cost, in the city where I work, repairing an obvious leak on a copper line costs between $80 and $120.
