Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Side by side Coldspot okay in either side lower down but too warm higher up, worth repairing?
Hi fridge doctor, I have a sears Coldspot 19 cu. that has stopped cooling and freezing at the top. It is a side by side. So about 2 feet of freezer freezes, and about 2 feet of refrigerator. cools. I have already cleaned the coils on the bottom, but still no help for top on the unit. In looking through your help section, it sounds like the fan motor (a fan that blows the air to the top?) is not working.
But there is also a fan that runs in the back of the unit (I think that is the fan that cools the compressor). What do you think or know is the problem? I am the do-it-yourselfer type, so I guess that makes me a technical person.
Age unknown, we had for 12 years My main concern is paying "the man" vs putting that money towards another refrigerator.
Remove the back cover of the freezer section. You will see one of two things. Either the frost line is incomplete, which indicates a system problem, (very expensive), or, if the freezing coils are embedded by frost, you have an automatic defrost malfunction. In this case you could thaw them out with a hand held hair dryer and it will work fine for a few days until it plugs up again. If you want to repair it yourself, either my book or video which I sell back on the web site, will instruct you.
