Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Side by side freezer section works but fridge side won’t
I have a friend whose fridge simply died out. And, unfortunately their warranty died out as well. It was a costly fridge when they purchased it too.
It is one of those two door fridges. The freezer side works perfectly whereas the refrigerator side simply cannot keep cool.
As they are now on a tight budget, would it be worth it to buy a used one, or pay for someone to look at it, hoping that the repair time wouldn't get too costly?
Could you tell me what normally would be a symptom for something like this? OR, is this description just way too vague? Thanks.
First off, make sure the fan in the freezer section is running and blowing hard whenever the compressor is running. If so then it's not defrosting automatically. If not, then it likely is a worn out fan motor, (not serious).
If it was the sealed system or the compressor in this case the freezer side would not be working properly and as you’ve indicated, it is. Usually a repair to the automatic defrost circuit requires the replacement of one of the electrical components. Depending on where you are from this shouldn't be too costly.
If you like to confirm that it is in fact an automatic defrost problem, ask them to unplug the refrigerator for 24hrs and leave the freezer door open. If it works OK for a few days once it is started up again, then gradually stops working like before, you will know for sure.
If you are a handy type of person you could help them out and repair this problem for them for a fraction of the cost with the help of my book or video. Let me know what happens.
