Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
What can and cannot be repaired by the owner?
Hello, I have a refrigerator at my cottage which is not quite running to its capacity. The problem? It remains cool but not cold, and it steadily runs stopping only 1-2 times per day. My cottage is located on an island and therefore I cannot get it serviced without going through a lot of trouble. Is there a way that I (a little bit handy) could resolve this problem? Thanks Joe
In answer to your question, you could repair this yourself but only if the problem is electrical or mechanical, not system.
First make sure all the fans that are on this one run whenever the compressor does. If you find one that does not come on, it’s just a matter of replacing the fan motor. If the fans are okay then it could possibly be an automatic defrost problem.
To determine this is quite simple. If your refrigerator is frost free (two doors with a fan running in the freezer compartment) try this test next time you leave the place. Shut the unit down for at least 24hrs with the doors open. Then if it works okay for 2 to 6 days then starts acting like it is now we know it's not defrosting automatically.
This you could repair yourself with the help of my book or video.
