Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Compressor was making a clicking noise now has burnt smell
My refrigerator started to have a burning smell. I've unplugged and emptied it out. The coils were extremely dusty so I went ahead and vacuumed them. It's a Kenmore Coldspot Porcelain 19, freezer up..it says model 106 with a bunch more numbers. It must be at least 10-15 years old since it came with the house. It's pretty basic, frost free and no ice maker.
I don't plan to plug it in again unless I get it checked out and I might just go ahead and replace it. It was working normally up to today but it had been making a funny clicking noise periodically that it didn't do before. The burnt smell is strongest at the back of the unit.
Think it might be worth fixing? It can't be worth a whole lot of money and I'm really looking for a good excuse to buy a new one with an ice maker.
Probably the compressor starter is burnt out. This happens very commonly on this design. If you take the terminal cover off the compressor and smell the smell you noticed on the device, you're sure. If this is where the smell is coming from the part you need is an RCO-410 cap start kit. Costs about 32 dollars in Canada where I'm from. These refrigerators almost last forever so you may be out of luck on getting a new one for a while or if it is in working order you could sell it and use the money towards a new one. Not working it’s worth almost nothing. Working it should be worth 200 to 250 depending on where you’re from. Good used refrigerators are in high demand.
