Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Odor from behind the fridge

I purchased a side by side refrigerator from my friends who are divorcing. This refrigerator is approx. 3 years old. After plugging this fridge in, I noticed a smell coming from behind the fridge.

The inside does not smell but there is a foul smell coming from behind the fridge when the fan comes on. What are your thoughts on this smell? Please help! Thanks,

This is very unusual, most of the time when I get complaints about odor it's form the inside of the cabinet. This should be easy enough to solve though. The odor is likely from dust accumulated underneath, or from something in the drain pan. If the unit has visible fiberglass insulation underneath you should replace it with new because, even if the source of the odor has been removed, the insulation can still contain it.

Unplug the refrigerator, take off the kick plate and rear cover. Clean and vacuum the entire under- carriage, condenser, fan, and condensation evaporator tray.

Be gentle with the components though, especially the capillary tube ( a pipe about the size of a 14 gauge copper wire )
