Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Smelled smoky, now not working, worth repairing?
I sure hope you can help me. We have an Amana 23 refrigerator, purchased in 1980. Last night (this close to the holidays) we noticed a smoke smell in the kitchen, and finally figured it was the fridge. Sure enough, on checking, the things in the freezer had started to thaw. Also the refrigerator portion had started warming up. At this time, we can not afford to purchase a new one. Fortunately, we live in northwest Pennsylvania, and we are having a COLD snap so we have put everything we can in the garage. I don't know if it will help, but here are the specs on the unit. Serial # E00034626317 Model# TD23D A friend has told me that if it is the compressor motor, that it will not be able to be fixed. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank You so very much.
I know it seems negative but when something like this happens that smoky smell can be your friend, for whatever burnt out on it should be relatively easy to find. You just have to get right down and find the actual component that has the odor on it and that will be what needs to be replaced.
Most times when I've seen this happen it's the compressor start relay that burns out, this is a device underneath the terminal cover mounted on the side of the compressor so this would be a good place to start. If it is the relay on a refrigerator this age it's advisable to replace it with a device we call a hard start pack which is a universal solid state starter that adds capacitance to the circuit Try part # RCO-410.
