Would you be kind enough to tell me whether it is possible to ruin a refrigerator by unplugging it and leaving the door closed for an extended period? How does one remove the smell after that has happened? Please reply.

Leaving a unit unplugged with the door closed will cause a lot of extra work to remove the odor that inevitably will result. However, the odor can be removed in all cases with enough diligence.
