Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Upright freezer coils frost up

Hello, saw your site and appreciate the help. Every couple of months the coils and fan on my upright freezer freeze solid with ice. What is happening and how can I stop that from happening?

If your upright freezer doesn’t have a fan in it, this could be happening more than it should because the door isn’t sealing properly. Check all the way around the seals. One small leak can let a lot of air and the moisture it contains inside the cabinet. Adjusting the door is quite simple. Let me know if you need any instructions.

Otherwise, if your freezer has a fan in it, it likely has an automatic defrost circuit as well. Check the wiring diagram if present. It’s likely a worn out component of this circuit. Troubleshooting it would be the same as on a frost free fridge. My book has an article in it that can help you track down this problem. If you want a copy let me know.
