Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Can’t get temperatures right in a refrigerator operating in the garage
I have a General Electric model TFX24 PATA WW (frost free - side by side). I noticed recently that the freezer compartment was not as cold as usual. I checked it with an appliance thermometer and found it to be 28 degrees F. This refrigerator is in my garage, where the current air temperature is 35 degrees F. I checked the condenser and evaporator fans. They appeared to be operating normally. I also opened both doors and turned the thermostat to the highest setting. The refrigerator appeared to operate normally. The owner's manual states that if the room temperature is below 60 degrees F, the freezer control should be turned to a higher setting. I turned the freezer control to the highest position and waited 24 hours, the freezer compartment temperature remained 28 degrees F.
Could the air temperature, in the garage, have an effect on the operation of the refrigerator? Should I set the thermostat to the highest setting, in addition to the freezer control? Also, do you have any ideas on what might be wrong?
Hi, your refrigerator is only designed to run at normal room temperature ambient levels. When you place it in an environment other than this very strange things will happen. To name a few, the compressor won't start when it should, the cold control won't sense when the unit should cut in and out, and the defrost cycle will be out of whack.
Remember that the refrigerator can’t heat the inside of the cabinet to get it warmer than the surrounding air. Also note that adjusting the controls on any refrigerator or freezer all the way up or down is not a good idea either.
