Run Times and Settings
As a household furnace or heat pump cycles on and off to balance the amount of heat lost by the amount of heat added to achieve a constant temperature in your home, so do refrigerators and freezers cycle on and off. Unfortunately problems, or perceived problems, can't accurately be determined by observing the number or length of cycles as just too many factors are at play. As you will see by the answers to some of the questions on this subject, the amount of time your equipment runs or doesn't run is not a concern unless of course your equipment never shuts off.
After a repair some of my customers will ask me to set up the controls properly. I always have to explain that the proper settings can only be done by trial and error as two identical refrigerators made by the same factory on the same day would have to be set differently. If you want a simple non-technical way to set up your refrigerator and freezer temperatures:
Set the refrigerator section as close as you can get it to freezing, but not freezing. Set the freezer section to how you like your ice cream. |
Not too many questions are asked about this subject, but it still is important enough to warrant its own category. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about run times and settings.
