Hard pack installed when problem was defrost circuit

Refrigerator quit cooling and water dispenser has no water. It's a side by
side Kenmore(AMANA) with an ice-maker, M/N:59658647890, S/N: 0005137054.
First I checked the water valve solenoid it was good both sides read 300
ohms. I found ice buildup on the bottom of the freezer compartment. I
removed the panel to look at the evaporator coil and found ice buildup on
the coil. I let the ice melt. After the ice melted I checked the water
dispenser and it was now working fine. I then advanced the defrost timer and
everything kicked on except the compressor. I checked the cold control and
when I turned it to the off position everything turned off when I put it
back to the normal setting everything turned back on. except the compressor.
I hooked up a hard start kit to the compressor and it worked for about ten
minutes and stopped. Is it time for a new compressor or can it possibly be
something else? If you could shed some light on this it would be greatly
appreciated.

Sounds like initially it was an automatic defrost problem. The timer can and
will cut out the compressor if it clicks over into the defrost cycle. This
would be indicated if the fan in the freezer section stopped also. So you
just need to get to the bottom of your defrost problem.

If the compressor just cut out leaving the fan running I wonder if you got
the right hard start pack or perhaps the air is not circulating due to the
condenser cooling fan not hooked in, or the back cover not put back in
place?

You could easily learn more about all this with the help of my online book.

Your input is extremely helpful!

Hundreds of people visit these pages daily looking for information about household refrigeration equipment. Dissatisfied with a particular model or company? Solved a particular problem? Let us know. Even the smallest detail can help so many people.

For example, let us know that your particular refrigerator model had a burnt out freezer fan motor one month after the warrantee expired, then everyone knows that a fan failure on that model is a distinct possibility.
