Odor in deep freeze after a melt down

Our freezer in our basement was unplugged for an uncertain amount of time
before it was noticed. After getting rid of all of the rotten food, how do
we get rid of the awful smell.

This is one of the methods to remove odors from The Fridge Doctor Book, it's
meant for frost free refrigerators but it will work for a deep freeze also:

Make a mixture (50-50) of Vanilla Extract (not artificial) and rubbing
alcohol. Put into a spray bottle, unplug fridge and SOAK down the inside of
the unit, paying special attention to places where pieces come together,
leaving a crevice, really soak these places heavy. After the entire unit is
saturated, stuff both compartments with crumpled up newspapers, close door
and let sit running normally for 24 to 48 hours.

Your input is extremely helpful!

Hundreds of people visit these pages daily looking for information about household refrigeration equipment. Dissatisfied with a particular model or company? Solved a particular problem? Let us know. Even the smallest detail can help so many people.

For example, let us know that your particular refrigerator model had a burnt out freezer fan motor one month after the warrantee expired, then everyone knows that a fan failure on that model is a distinct possibility.
