Toxic consequences from a Freon leak?

Okay...After reading all the other questions/comments about odor and smell
it sounds like freon is not toxic. Is that what you are saying? I have a 5
yr. old fridge that started smelling bad and the food tasted like it smelled
and then a year later the freezer stopped making ice cubes and a few weeks
later stopped keeping the food frozen. The tech told me it had a freon
leak. Now don't tell me that smell and taste was my food because right
after it was fixed the smell and bad taste went away! Now everyone in my
family has similar health issues and I am very concerned it is because of
that. Do you know where I can find product specifications on freon?

Sorry don't know specifically where you can find information on this,
perhaps if you could talk to the engineers at DuPont the inventors and
exclusive suppliers of R12 Freon between 1930 and 1993.

Before we had or had to use recovery systems we used to vent it directly
into the air when working on systems. Some days I would vent up to 5 systems
I was working on and would breath the gas which was all around me. This went
on between 1985 and 1997. That's 12 years of daily exposure, and never
suffered any negative consequences. I know many other long time
refrigeration techs and none of them have ever had any problems. The
inventor in 1930 even filled his lungs with it and blew out a candle.

I do know though that if your freezer and refrigerator sections were not
working properly and you had spoilage with toxic bacteria growing in your
food, it is hard to detect. You and your family may have heath problems
related to that. The problems should go away though once you quit using any
of the food that was stored before you got this fixed.

Your input is extremely helpful!

Hundreds of people visit these pages daily looking for information about household refrigeration equipment. Dissatisfied with a particular model or company? Solved a particular problem? Let us know. Even the smallest detail can help so many people.

For example, let us know that your particular refrigerator model had a burnt out freezer fan motor one month after the warrantee expired, then everyone knows that a fan failure on that model is a distinct possibility.
