Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Gibson side by side freezes on warmest setting
We have and older Gibson side by side which has recently started to freeze the contents in the frig side. We haven't the resources to buy a new fridge at this time and were wondering what the problem could be and could we fix it our selves or do we need to call a repair man. Thank you. P.S. we have our thermostat at the very warmest setting.
Sounds like you have an insensitive cold control the device you may be calling the thermostat. On a Gibson Side by Side this control should be located at the top of the freezer compartment. If you are at all handy you should be able to replace it yourselves. Unplug the refrigerator, pry off the dial (it should come straight outward) remove the two screws holding the control down. Then take off the two wires going to it. The control has a hollow tube attached to it called the capillary. On your design the capillary is not fastened to anything, it is just placed into the area immediately below it.
Once you have it out, take it and your refrigerator’s model number with you to the parts store to get a replacement. Reinstall as the original was.
