Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Runs constantly and freezes but shuts off if hit, compressor problem?

It started when the vegetables started to freeze (lettuce peppers, radish, carrots) turned down the dial now at it lowest point. Was fine for a while doing the same thing again. Noticed that the temperature inside is 28° to 30° before it goes off. Also when it is in that temperature range it will shut off if I hit the covering over the temperature control. I was going to change the control but was told it might be in the compressor.

If it was the compressor it would be the opposite, the unit wouldn't be cold enough. Your first intuition was right.
