Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

1955 Kelvinator side by side

I inherited a 1955 Kelvinator Foodarama (MODEL# K-FDRMA, PART# 1170514) side-by-side refrigerator when my grandmother passed away. She bought it new, and it served her well (with little need for service) for almost 40 years. I have found that the compressor runs for a very long time. Seemingly, it never shuts off, and the freezer section reaches sub-zero temperatures. The thermostats and fan are new, so I investigated the overload/relay.

This device is a 2.5 Bakelite cube that plugs onto pins shrouded on the side of the compressor. Inside, the coil glue has deteriorated, and the pole piece seems to bind in the winding. I think it's time for a new overload/relay. This type of part hasn't been made for years so, I need

to find newer parts that are rated to match the compressor specs. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find the original specs to create a replacement. I've tried the parts houses and Klixon, but no help without knowing what specs I'm trying to match.

The compressor tag reads: KELVINATOR# 1071036/ W/OVERLOAD PROTECTION/ LBS. F12: 1

AMPS: 5.0 MOTOR: 115 V 1750 RPM Any help is greatly appreciated!—

A Foodarama? They sure thought of creative names those days. That one does sound like a beauty! Anyway, replacing the overload and relay won't help the running too long problem you’re having. You may have a different problem causing this that either my book or video can help you solve. If you still want to go ahead and replace the relay I would advise replacing the entire starter with what is called a hard start pack. This is a stand alone component that takes the place of the original devices. Try part #RCO-410. I will attach the article out of my book that gives you more information.
