Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
1960’s GE has Freon leak
Here's the problem I have a 1960's model GE Model No: ULW11P Serial No. UZN653650 that hangs on the wall. I have had General Electric come and diagnose the problem and they have indicated that I have a Freon leak in the sealed system. My husband and I would LOVE to get the unit fixed vs a new model. Please tell me anything I could do to accomplish this. I do know that the unit has been retrofitted to accommodate new compressor etc. This is my last attempt to find someone who will take on this repair. Otherwise we will remove it from the wall and move on with life. Thanks for any help you could supply us.
If you lived in my city, Regina Sask. in Canada, I could come out to your home and repair it for you, but system repairs now cost at least $150 if the leak can be found easily, and if it is on a component that can be repaired.
Leaks can no longer be repaired on aluminum components, in Canada anyway, so sometimes we run into problems finding another part in good enough condition to warrant the job on these vintage types. Sometimes jobs like these get up to around $400.
You didn't mention where you are from, but you may find it hard to find a tech willing to take on something like this (there aren't many). In my opinion, the job is only feasible if you have a reason to proceed, other than economic logic.
