Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

50s refrigerator freezes in the refrigerator section, can I repair this myself?

I have an old Zenith refrigerator. The freezer is inside on the top. We use it as a keg refrigerator. Now it freezes everything. I'm thinking it might need a new thermostat, but am not sure if it is worth fixing. If it is, would your online book have the info I need to change the thermostat on such an old unit?

A Zenith eh? Those were brought over on the Mayflower right? No but seriously, when you get into some of the 50's and 60's designs they also may have incorporated the compressor start relay in with the cold control. To check this first unplug the refrigerator and dismount the original to see if it has just two contacts with wires coming off it or more. If the latter better call a tech. If not, my book will give you a bunch of necessary information about the replacement. You, or someone you can get to help you, will need to be mechanically dexterous, and there is a kit for doing this on these designs called a VT1.
