Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Finding a tech to repair a monitor top GE

I am trying to locate someone qualified to repair an old General Electric monitor top refrigerator. It has been in the family for well over 50 years and recently quit. It is the first time since it has been in the family that it has needed repair. Do you have any suggestions?

Sorry I know of no source of information about these, have you tried at GE? Perhaps one of the older techs remembers something about these designs. The company is often very helpful in these matters. The monitor top should have a tag or nameplate on it that states what kind of refrigerant it uses, you may have to look really closely to find it. If it’s Freon (sometimes just called R12 or F12 on the tag) any experienced tech should be able to rework the system, but if not noted or found that it uses anything else, be really careful. Some early refrigerants were extremely toxic.
