Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Owner of one of the first refrigerators ever made
Informative web site. I found it while looking for information on a Frigidaire refrigerator I recently picked up. It was manufactured by the Delco Light Company in Dayton, Ohio. I've been surfing the web to try to find any articles, pictures or even an owners manual to go with it. The unit is in great shape. Although the paint is in poor condition, the wood (oak) joints are great, no rot, all the hardware is in good shape and I also have all the mechanical items: motor, compressor, coils etc. Do you have any information regarding this refrigerator? I'm going to restore it, although not to operating condition. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.
As far as I know the original Frigidaire was a subsidiary company of General Motors, they may have an archive available so give them a try. You may have to travel to Dayton though.
So the original Frigidaire is no longer in business since the 60's. They did build excellent refrigerators and had a very good name. Perhaps this is why some modern units are called Frigidaire now. I’m not too sure of this but it seems to me now that other lesser companies have just purchased the use of the name to take advantage of customer loyalty.
For this reason it may be hard to find any information on your antique. One tip for you is that you can often find the exact model in archival Sears or Eaton’s catalogs at your public library to establish the date. I'm assuming it’s quite old if it had wooden parts.
So, you should be extremely cautious about something. If it still contains the original refrigerant it could be very toxic. Before Freon was invented folks actually kept canaries in the kitchen for a special reason. If the birds were dead in the morning they knew the refrigerator had a leak. So please be careful on that regard.
