Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:

Sulfur Dioxide refrigerators

Dear fridge doctor, where can I find out about a sulfur dioxide based refrigerant in my antique electric (1920's) GE refrigerator? Can this be modernized to a Freon unit? Is it dangerous? Please help me!!! Thanks

Sorry but Freon replaced the use of Sulfur Dioxide back in the early 1930's and I've not had any experience at all with these systems. Be careful with this one as one thing for sure this gas is toxic. You may be able to find out more about this chemical on the web or by asking a chemical engineer.

When I first started out in the '70's I heard some of the older techs talking about these systems but it may be hard to find anyone who knows anything about them now. As far as modernizing it, anything is possible with enough money but the question is, is it feasible? The entire system could be replaced but the dilemma we come across then is that the unit is no longer authentic.
