Frequently Asked Questions About Domestic Refrigerator Repair:
Testing the electrical circuit on a monitor top
I have a 1930 Monitor-top GE refrigerator with a foot pedal on left front leg of the refrigerator. When plugged in, the refrigerator starts, but shuts off after about 2 minutes. It will start back up, but will always shut off. It looks like the power cord, from the compressor to the wall outlet, has been replaced. The plug is the type that you plug in, and give it a half turn, to lock it in. This plug is cracked. Could it be short circuiting? Or is it the compressor? Any help would be appreciated. I got it from an original owner and it is in excellent shape.
You could temporarily remove the wires that go to the compressor and hook them up to a light bulb to test whether it's the supply cord or the compressor. If the light bulb stays on indefinitely then you know it's the compressor cutting out. Good luck with this old boy.
